Frequently Asked Questions

What is hospice care?
Hospice is specialized care for individuals with a serious or life-limiting illness when the focus shifts from curing the condition to providing comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Care is provided wherever the patient calls home — including private residences, assisted living communities, and nursing facilities.

Who qualifies for hospice?
A patient may be eligible when a physician determines a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its normal course. Eligibility can be re-evaluated and extended as needed. Families can contact us anytime to discuss whether hospice may be appropriate.

When is the right time to choose hospice?
Many families wait too long. Hospice is ideal when:
• Symptoms become harder to manage
• Frequent hospital visits occur
• There’s a desire to stay home with comfort and support
Early enrollment often provides the greatest quality of life for both patients and loved ones.

What services are included with hospice?
Grove Care Centers of America provides:
• Skilled nursing care
• Pain and symptom management
• Medication and medical equipment related to the illness
• Emotional and spiritual support
• Certified nursing assistants for personal care
• Social work support and resource navigation
• 24/7 on-call clinical support
• Bereavement services for families

There are no out-of-pocket costs for covered services.

Does hospice mean giving up?
Not at all. Hospice focuses on living with comfort, peace, and control. Our goal is to support what matters most to the patient — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Where is hospice care provided?
Care is provided in the setting the patient prefers:
Home
Assisted living or memory care community
Skilled nursing facility
Our team travels to you.

Who pays for hospice?
Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans fully cover hospice services, including medications and equipment related to the illness.

Can a patient stop hospice if their condition improves?
Absolutely. Patients can pause or discontinue hospice at any time and resume curative treatments if desired. They may also re-enroll later if needed.

How soon can hospice care start?
Once eligibility is confirmed, our team can typically begin care the same day or within 24 hours.

What support is offered for families?
We provide education, emotional support, respite options, and ongoing grief support for up to 13 months after a loved one’s passing.

Is hospice only for cancer patients?
No. Hospice supports individuals with a wide range of life-limiting conditions, including heart disease, COPD, dementia, neurological disorders, kidney disease, and more.
